Find your sound. Follow your curiosity.

A small guide to jamming, learning and keeping your progress. Maestro Lutvik von Badgehoven is your honey-badger companion; click his portrait for About LUTVIK, or use Help & About when Show Maestro is off.

1. Start with JAM

  1. Choose Key root and Instrument: guitar, bass guitar or piano.
  2. Choose a Genre library and Scale / style, or browse the scale cards. The library has seven categories, 23 scales and modes, and 46 phrase templates.
  3. Set BPM and Meter / grid, then press Start jam. Enable Metronome for a pulse, Root drone for a sustained reference, or Play phrase to hear the suggestion. Press Stop to finish.
  4. Try Mutate / regenerate for another phrase. Explore targets, parent scale, suggested chord changes and the playing guide.

Green (G) is an anchor, yellow (Y) a connection and red (R) expressive spice. ★ marks a playing note; ◇ marks a next phrase target. Scroll the instrument diagram for more positions. Guitar tone offers Clean or Distorted on the next playback.

JAM genre cards provide scale and phrase inspiration; they are not a backing band. JAM counts quarter-note BPM: 6/8 clicks eighth notes, and the triplet grid clicks thirds. Chord suggestions are for exploration, not an automatically timed arrangement.

2. Shape a loop in STUDIO

Switch to STUDIO for an editable chord progression and retro, Casio-like accompaniment. Choose Instrument, Genre / arrangement style, Harmonic difficulty, Key (major guidance), Tempo and Meter. The seven arrangement styles are blues, rock, jazz, funk, metal, pop and fusion.

Enter chord symbols such as C, Am7, G7b9 or C/E. Use Add chord and the row controls to build or remove changes and choose durations in beats, half-bars or bars. One row works as a looping vamp. Key changes guidance; it does not transpose chord symbols already entered.

Choose Metronome only, Drums + bass, Full backing band or Custom mix. In Backing mix, adjust drums, bass and harmony levels or mutes while playing; edits select Custom mix. Enable Metronome and Solo phrase separately, Generate phrase, then Play loop. Loop progression repeats the changes; Stop clears playback. The accompaniment leaves space for your chosen instrument.

STUDIO BPM counts the denominator note: in 6/8 one beat is an eighth note. Its beat convention differs from JAM. Follow the current chord, traffic lights and phrase display as you play.

3. Hear it, read it, make it yours

In Make it yours, press Use current phrase to capture the current JAM or STUDIO phrase. Capture again after workspace edits; practice uses a snapshot.

Expand Exact pitches, rhythm and positions for a text alternative. Onsets there count quarter notes; practice tempo follows the captured workspace’s beat unit.

4. Record and review locally

Open Record & review your playing. Connect your microphone (including a Behringer C-1U USB microphone), select Audio input when available, and press Record. Allow the browser’s microphone request. Device names may appear only after permission is granted. Use headphones: monitoring is off, but speakers can leak into the microphone.

Pause / resume, Stop, Play recording, Return to beginning and the recording position slider let you review your take. Compare A (the example) with B (your recording) and write Review notes.

B records the microphone only. Digital backing is not mixed into it, and generated music is not exported as a separate audio stem. Recordings stay on this device in browser storage; nothing uploads or syncs. Download this take to keep a separate audio file. If storage fails, download before leaving the page. Recording requires browser support and a secure connection or localhost.

5. Keep sessions and favorites

Open Save sessions & favorite scales. Capture the current phrase, enter a Session name and Save session. Saves include captured JAM or STUDIO settings, phrase, practice settings and review notes, with a reference to the current stored take. Choose a saved item and Reopen session to return to it. Remove selected session removes its library entry; recording blobs are retained to protect other references.

Toggle current JAM scale favorite adds or removes a shortcut. Download library backup exports the session library as JSON; download recordings separately. There is no library-import control in this version.

Browser storage is not a permanent backup. Clearing site data, private browsing or storage eviction can remove sessions and takes. Saves do not travel between browsers or devices. Keep downloaded library files and audio takes somewhere safe.

6. Offline use, installation and updates

First open LUTVIK with access to its server and wait for Offline ready in Help & About. The app, artwork, library and this manual are cached locally. The first visit cannot work offline before that cache is complete. No external fonts, accounts or cloud service are needed.

Use your browser’s app or install menu when offered; availability varies by browser and device. A bookmarked browser tab also works. Keep the same app address: another address uses different browser storage. For an update, reconnect to the server, then close all LUTVIK tabs and reopen when the update notice appears. The previous offline build is retained until the new worker activates.
